FREE Hammock Buying Guide
How To Buy The Perfect Hammock for You and Your Family Imagine for a minute, slowly swaying from left to right. The soft feel of cotton against your skin. A soft breeze gently caresses your skin, and your favourite drink within arms reach. No, this isnt the Caribbean, this is your home. A hammock is "any time, any place" furniture, that speaks comfort and luxury. It also is immensely practical, as any navy in the world will tell you. Hammocks are immensly comfortable, easy to care for, stong and come in an abundance of fabrics and colours. When someone sees a hammock, they immediately want to have a go at it amazing comfort. But be careful, there are many different makes and models out there. We have taken the time to analyse the perfect hammocks for the UK market, taking into account not only price (as that is obviously important), but production materials, safety, as well as the UK climate. So please read on and allow me to talk you through the different types of Hammocks out there. Hammock Styles Not All Hammocks are made the same. Be sure you can purchase one from someone you can trust. Banana Hammocks Banana hammocks are simply, hammocks without spreader bars. These are far more flexible in terms of lying style than other hammocks. The most comfortable method is the lie in a banana hammock diagonally. So for the novice, they might be slightly tricky to get into at first, but you are truly rewarded with a significantly higher level of comfort than spreader bar hammocks. For an example of a typical banana hammock THE PARADISO is a good example of a banana hammock. Spreader Bar Hammocks Spreader bar hammocks are widely known as the "traditional style" hammock. It has two wooden bars on either side of the bed, which stretches out the fabric fully. This allows the user to lie in the hammock in a straight line, similar to a bed. Although you can lie on it diagonally, because the fabric is fully stretched already, the comfort is not as great. Choose these hammocks for fine traditional looks and for ease entry/exit from the hammock. For an example of a spreader bar hammock that I sell, then THE PALACIO is an excellent example of a spreader bar hammock. Hammock Materials This section is very important, as the wrong choice of materials will compromise comfort, as well as safety! Polyester Hammocks or Parachute Silk Hammocks There are loads of companies out there selling polyester hammocks, and why not. You can't beat the weight and the strength of a polyester hammock. Polyester hammocks are ideal if you are on a hiking holiday, when weight is an important issue. Polyester hammocks are also highly water resistant, so you can easily use it outdoors and get it wet, without worry. However, all of this comes at a price, and that is comfort. Polyester hammocks are very reasonably priced but are not the most comfortable in the world. Consider them to be more utility hammocks rather than decadent comfort. Cotton Hammocks Cotton hammocks are undoubtedly the most comfortable. The woven threads are very comfortable on skin and the cotton fabric breathes easily creating a cool, comfortable experience. However, Cotton does have its drawbacks. For instance, you shouldn't get it wet. and if left in direct sunlight, the fabric will fade. Invest in a hammock with a high thread count, which means that the threads are woven tighter together, improving its water resistance as well as blocking stronger winds in temperate or moist climates, like the UK! Brazilian hammocks are perfect for this! Consider cotton hammocks for ultimate comfort and indoor/outdoor home use. But remember to take the hammock indoors at the end of the day, as it won't like dew and/or rain. Canvas Hammocks Canvas hammocks are also made of cotton, but it's the weave and stitching that gives it it's look and feel. Consider canvas hammocks for camping or on boating trips, as it will be good at resisting water, but comfort is slightly compromised. The canvas hammock, as anyone who as been in the navy will tell you, is very popular in our navies. Where Hammocks Are Made Where the hammocks are made is nearly as important as what material it's made of. Each location around the world makes hammocks slightly differently. Mayan Hammocks Mayan Hammocks are usually made with cotton as well as certain silks. They are typically made in the banana style and using "ropes" for the more traditional spreader bar hammock. Because of the hot, dry climate of Mexico, the cotton is of a low thread-count and breathes very easily. For moist climates, like the UK, this could be a slight problem, as it won't resist moisture and could get moldy over time. Nicaraguan Hammocks Hammocks in Nicaragua use the same light cotton threads as the Mayan hammocks, but use a special "double weave". This makes the hammock thicker and stronger than it's Mayan counterpart. The majority of hammocks made here are banana ones, without bars. Brazilian Hammocks Hammocks made in Brazil benefit from thicker cotton as well as a tighter weave. This makes them stronger than other hammocks as well as being more resistant to water and cool winds. Although not recommended to leave out doors over extended periods. It is perfectly OK for the odd "wet bathing suit", or for it to lounge nearby the pool. We have chosen to sell Brazilian hammocks because of the combination of comfort, ease of care and it is ideally suited to the UK climate! Hammock Stands Choosing the right stand for your hammock will prolong the life of your hammock as well as looking great in your home or garden! I Don't need a stand. I want to use my trees! Of course you can use existing trees in your garden to hang your hammock. This is truly the traditional way to enjoy it! But please remember a couple of points first:
I want to mount it to a wall in my house This is perfectly OK too. But use the sizing guide above to ensure you choose the correct hammock for the space you have. You should also consider the mounting equipment I sell to ensure your hammock is secure and safe. Metal Hammock Stands Metal stands are the most practical stands you can buy. The are also very reasonably priced. The ones I sell are fully adjustable and come in different colours too. They are perfect for both indoor and outdoor as well. Never exceed the weight limit for the stand. Doing so will likely cause the metal to bend and render your hammock useless, not to mention cause injury. Wood Hammock Stands For unabashed decadence and stability, nothing beats a wood hammock stand. With it's graceful arcs, stunning good looks, and strength, if you can afford it, a wood stand will offer years of comfort. However to bear in mind that a wood stand will occasionally need to be treated in order to cope with the elements. I sell wood stands that are both pre-treated and un-treated. so the choice is yours.
